Welcome back to our blog, today we want to speak about one of the best products given by our volcano, also an important economic resource and source of pride for the inhabitants, viticulture and etnean DOC wines.

The presence of grapevines and wine production on our Etna  date back to far ages. Omero, Virgilio, Plinio, Strabone before had celebrated in their works the quality of etnean wines and the fertility of soil. In fact the wine etnean production appears in the history in the 8th century b.C. when greek colonies introduced the “aegean small tree”, later the roman domination contributed to diffuse etnean wines even in other domains. Between the ‘700 and the end of ‘800 the etnean viticulture of Etna reached the maximum surface covered by vines with about 8.000 hectares. After the economic crises of 1960 the viticulture of Etna developed according to more winemaking and and enological models.

Placed on hills and mountain, the etnean viticulture develops on terraced plots of small or medium width. Usually, inside vineyards, you can find rural buildings, including wineries. A Republican President Decree of 1968 has given to Etna wines the “Etna” DOC guarantee of origin (Superior White, White, Red and Rosé), involving the territories of 21 etnean municipalities, 17 of which belonged to the Park district. Park Authority preserves and promotes the etnean viticulture as “inestimable inherited patrimony” to appreciate and value. Aim that can be achieved through the safeguard of etnean environmental and cultural patrimony, the subsidizing to improve and stabilization of qualitative parameters of productions and finally to promotion of the image connected to product connected to the territory.
