The North Etna Summit Craters excursion will take you to the summit of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

At the height of 3330m above sea level you will be able to admire a unique landscape: the smoking active summit craters, the Aeolian Islands and all of eastern Sicily.

The Etna North Summit Craters Tour includes transportation in 4×4 vehicles from Piano Provenzana at 1800m to the height of 2800m, from where we will begin our trek to the summit of Mount Etna.

The Etna Summit Craters Tour is adrenaline-pumping, exciting, with a moderate trekking. It’s the only excursion that will allow you to walk around Etna’s summit craters and feel the power of nature of this volcano.

Etna Summit Tour: details of the experience

Here are the stages of the North Etna Summit Craters tour:

  • Meeting and briefing with the guide at the “Etna Travel Service” ticket office in Piano Provenzana
  • Ascent by 4×4 vehicles from 1800m up to 2950m
  • Photo stop to admire the landscape
  • Trekking to the rim of the summit craters at 3330m of height
  • Trekking in the summit area to admire the North-East crater, the South-East crater, the Bocca Nuova “New Mouth” and the Voragine “Pit” craters
  • Descent over volcanic sands down to Piano delle Concazze
  • Return to the starting point by 4×4 vehicles

Full Description Etna Summit Tour

The Etna Summit Craters hike from the north is the perfect tour for those who want to reach the top of Etna.

The trek is moderate, suitable for those who are averagely trained and in good health. Children aged at least 10 years can also take part in the tour, if they are used to walking.

The hike to the Summit Craters is a unique and unforgettable experience on the northern slope of Etna.

The locality of Piano Provenzana(map) is the main meeting point for this side of the volcano, where you will meet the Volcanological Guide at 8:00 am at the Etna Travel service ticket office.

The Guide will take a few minutes for the information briefing, after which the ascent will begin with the use of special 4X4 vehicles (ticket not included) to reach the height of 2950 m.

After taking some photos of the landscape, we will begin our trek over ancient and recent lava fields to reach the rim of Etna Summit Craters at an altitude of 3330m.

We will begin trekking across the summit area, admiring the North-East Crater, the South-East Crater, the Bocca Nuova (New Mouth) and the Voragine (Pit) craters.

The degassing activity with the countless fumaroles will make the scenery suggestive and unique. Our trek around the summit area may vary depending on the volcanic activity at the time.

We will start our descent through volcanic sands to reach Piano delle Concazze: the breathtaking view will show us the Valle del Leone (Lion’s Valley) and the more famous Valle del Bove (Bove Valley), offering us a unique and unforgettable scenery.

The special 4×4 vehicles will take us back to the starting point, where we will say goodbye, happy to have lived this extraordinary experience.

WARNING: Excursions to the summit craters may be changed or interrupted by the guides at any time if conditions are not optimal due to weather or volcanic activity.

To avoid any risk, it is a good idea to be fully aware of your health conditions and to make them known to your guide. Here are some important notes on safety:

  • Pregnant women who are over three months pregnant are not allowed any type of hiking activity.
  • Anyone suffering from heart problems, asthma or vertigo is not recommended to undertake this type of activity at the summit craters.
  • For excursions to Etna’s summit area, due to the continuous presence of windblown volcanic ash, the use of contact lenses is prohibited.
  • At the guide’s discretion, excursions may be changed or interrupted if weather conditions, environmental causes, or possible volcanic risk represent any source of danger.
  • It is also at the guide’s discretion to interrupt the excursion for any reason that may compromise the safety and therefore the physical integrity of an individual or the entire group.
